Tso Moriri Lake Ladakh

Tso Moriri Lake, also known as "Moriri Lake" or "Mountain Lake", is a high altitude lake in the Changthang Plateau of Ladakh. Situated at an altitude of approximately 4,522 meters (14,836 ft) above sea level, Lake Tso Moriri is surrounded by rugged mountains and offers a unique and serene experience.

Tso Moriri is one of the largest lakes in the Indian Himalayan region. It covers an area of ​​approximately 120 square kilometers. The turquoise-blue waters of Tso Moriri Lake transform the Changthang Plateau into a vibrant scene.

Tso Moriri Lake collects water from melting snow and several small streams. The lake is home to many species of migratory birds and other wildlife. The area around Tso Moriri is part of a wildlife sanctuary. It is an important site for the endangered black-necked stork species. Korzok Monastery

Korzok Monastery, also known as Korzok Gompa or Tso Moriri Monastery, is a Buddhist monastery located on the northern shore of Lake Tso Moriri. The history of this monastery dates back to the 19th century. Korzok Monastery was founded in the 19th century by Kushok Bakula Rinpoche and belongs to the Yellow Hat (Gelugpa) Community of Tibetan Buddhism.

Korzhok Monastery is situated at an altitude of approximately 4,595 meters (15,075 ft), making it one of the highest monasteries in the world. Traditional Tibetan architecture with white walls, thangkas and other decorations can be seen in this monastery. Spiritual activities, thangkas (religious paintings on cloth) and Buddhist statues take place in the main community hall within the monastery.

This monastery is an important spiritual and cultural center for the local community and Buddhist followers of the area. Korzok Guster festival is one of the major annual events celebrated in this monastery. It usually takes place in the sixth month of the Tibetan calendar (around July or August) and involves mask dances, special prayers and cultural activities. This festival attracts both locals and tourists alike.

Wildlife Watching - Tso Moriri Lake, Ladakh

Located in the Changthang Plateau of Ladakh, Tso Moriri Lake and its surrounding area are home to a variety of wildlife. Tso Moriri is an important breeding site for the bar-headed swan. It is a migratory bird known for its high flights. The area is also home to the endangered black-necked stork. These beautiful birds are often seen in the wetlands around the lake. The Changthang Plateau is home to the Tibetan wild donkey, known locally as "kiang". These large, bushy herbivores are adapted to dry environments and are often seen grazing around Tso Moriri.

Himalayan marmots are usually found in the rocky areas around the lake. They are known for their special whistling sound. In the rugged hilly terrain around Tso Moriri, tourists may encounter the Himalayan blue sheep, also known as Bharal. These herbivorous sheep move with great speed and agility on steep slopes. Snow leopard can also be seen here.

Apart from the bar-headed swan and black-necked crane, the area attracts many other bird species. These include Brahminy ducks, brown-headed gulls and many migratory and resident birds. Small animals like pika and vole can also be seen here.

Tso Moriri Lake and its surrounding area is a great location for trekking and hiking enthusiasts. Korzok to Narbu Sumdo Trek (3 - 4 days), Tso Moriri to Tso Kar Trek (5 - 6 days), Kyammar to Tso Moriri Trek (6 - 7 days) are some of the many treks near the lake.

How to reach - Tso Moriri Lake

Tso Moriri Lake is located in a remote part of Ladakh. The nearest city is Leh, and reaching the lake involves a long mountain drive. Tso Moriri Lake is about 220 kilometers (137 mi) from Leh and the drive can take about 6–8 hours depending on road conditions.
